The Protection Trap
Have you ever noticed the thin layer of plastic that covers the screens of phones when they are first purchased? It is used to protect the phone from being scratched during transportation. However, many people keep the covers on, in order to protect their phone indefinitely. Eventually, the plastic becomes bubbled, scratched, and ugly.
The problem with this behaviour is that the plastic was there to protect the phone from looking scratched and ugly. The protection has become the problem - not the solution.
The same is often true in life. For example, Gary was working late so that his family would have everything they need; when what they really needed was to have him home to share their lives with.
Meanwhile, Selma was complaining to Gary that he's never home because he always works late. However, in trying to protect their family unity, she creates disunity by spending all of their family time complaining to Gary.
It is important for us to think about what we're really trying to achieve, and whether our actions are helping, or just making the situation worse. Ripping the plastic cover off your phone may be a good start!
